چکیده
In large eddy simulation (LES), we generally use information of the grid width in representing a filter (Δ) to evaluate subgrid scale (SGS) model. practical applications, however, widths are largely different streamwise and cross-streamwise directions, resulting cells having high aspect ratios. such case, often adopt cube root grid-cell volume for width; i.e., Δ=(ΔxΔyΔz)1/3 Cartesian system. Although this has been regarded as standard way determine width, its superiority over other strategies, using maximum all directions (i.e., Δ=max(Δx,Δy,Δz)), not always made clear. paper, investigate effect definition on prediction accuracy an SGS model, report priori tests several models highly resolved LES data backward-facing step flow. We focus particularly model performance shear layer downstream step, where there exists strong velocity gradient ratio cell is despite region being far from wall surfaces. This investigation enables us distinguish that near-wall damping. make important finding appropriate width. To properly, one direction much smaller than must be excluded determining

Diierent dynamic subgrid scale models, viz. the dynamic model of Germano et al. are evaluated by means of a priori tests. Direct numerical simulation data for fully-developed turbulent and transitional incompressible ows are used. Low correlation is obtained between exact and modeled subgrid scale stresses with the DSM. Conversely, good agreement is found for both the DMM and the DTM, since tho...

The paper presents Large Eddy Simulations of plane channel flow at a friction Reynolds number of 180 and 395 with a block-structured Finite Volume method. Local grid refinement near the solid wall is employed in order to reduce the computational cost of such simulations or other simulations of wall-bounded flows. Different subgrid-scale models are employed and different expressions for the leng...
متن کاملNumerical dissipation vs. subgrid-scale modelling for large eddy simulation
This study presents an alternative way to perform large eddy simulation based on a targeted numerical dissipation introduced by the discretization of the viscous term. It is shown that this regularisation technique is equivalent to the use of spectral vanishing viscosity. The flexibility of the method ensures high-order accuracy while controlling the level and spectral features of this purely n...
متن کاملNew subgrid-scale models for large-eddy simulation of Rayleigh-Bénard convection
At the crossroad between flow topology analysis and the theory of turbulence, a new eddy-viscosity model for Large-eddy simulation has been recently proposed by Trias et al .[PoF, 27, 065103 (2015)]. The S3PQR-model has the proper cubic near-wall behaviour and no intrinsic limitations for statistically inhomogeneous flows. In this work, the new model has been tested for an air turbulent Rayleig...
